Project Details

  The design aimed to provide quality space and respond to site conditions. Planning evolved around an existing tree, which witnessed the building's journey from start to finish and will continue to witness the journeys of many students. The tree offers comfortable shade for outdoor teaching, embracing the traditional gurukul method. Children play around it, climb its branches, and share tiffin under its shade. Two major axes were generated, forming the built mass, with a flight of steps in the void between, giving character to the building. These steps act as a courtyard, amphitheatre, covered assembly area, and a place for interaction.

  To boost creativity and concentration, colours, good ventilation, and ample natural light were incorporated. A filler slab helps cut costs. The pergola above the staircase void creates an interesting play of light and shadow throughout the day. These colourful shadows appeal to the children. The slab is cast with “Saraswathi Yantra,” a symbol dedicated to the goddess of Education, Saraswathi. The window grills are embedded with beads for children to play with and interact.

  The overall design approach aims to provide a comfortable and safe learning environment, enhancing students' creativity and focus. The spaces are designed for students to connect with education and life, making Gurukul at Kolhapur a place where learning becomes a cherished experience.
